Monday
45 Coffee. While I sign in at my workspace, I receive the first call. Saturday a shipment flew from Amsterdam to Johannesburg but one of the packages that was on board is not directly traceable. We deal with these kinds of challenges on a daily basis and you learn from experience which communication channels to use in order to make sure all the goods will be delivered at the destination on time.
30 Many flights take place during the weekends and to serve the customer well, I must be aware of the latest news and developments regarding the customer’s freight planning. For example, shipments may be delayed by various circumstances, ranging from bad weather to customs controls. Our business is 24/7 and unpredictable. It is certainly never boring.
00 I print this week’s agenda. Last week I visited six clients on site and every Monday I report the outcome of the evaluations and specific action points to my superior. Together we discuss how to smoothly implement certain improvements. This week I have five appointments in my calendar of which the first is this afternoon.
30 Sales meeting. At Kales we do not work with individual targets. Each month we review the results of the group and decide whether we might have to change course. The last couple of months the results are excellent with an average of more than 20 million kilos of freight per month.
00 Lunch.
15 The phone continues to ring, it’s rush hour. Because Kales Airline Services acts as the link between an airline and a freight agent, I speak both parties regularly. The social aspect, the dynamic environment and the international character appeal to me most in this profession.
30 I am visiting an agent, a regular customer of the firm. A colleague comes along so that my client will have a second point of contact for when I am unattainable. I myself am often in meetings or on the road and therefore the company’s policy is to always have a back-up Sales Executive for the customer. Furthermore, it is always nice to, especially when you do lot of business with someone, enjoy a good relationship.
00 Quickly send a few e-mails to an airline with its HQ in Asia. It’s midnight in Hong Kong so if I send my e-mails now, I will have them answered in my mailbox tomorrow morning.
50 Stuck in traffic!
